DOMESTIC VACCINE PRODUCTION

The beginnings of domestic vaccine production date back to the period when the Croatian territories were part of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy (1868-1918). The first compulsory smallpox vaccination against date back to 1891, and the Royal Institute for the Manufacture of Animal Vaccine Against Smallpox in Zagreb in 1893.:

“In order to meet the requirements of the 1891 Law on Smallpox Vaccination, which requires the Royal Government to distribute vaccines free of charge to administrative districts, the Royal Government established a vaccine production institute at Kukovićeva Street 27 in Zagreb. Private physician and pharmacists can also obtain fresh lymph at an appropriate price.

(Official Gazette of May 8, 1893).

The overall development path of domestic production of biological medicinal products to date has been marked by the so-called two golden periods:

Collaboration with the Rockefeller Foundation
Institute of Hygiene with the School of Public Health in Zagreb (1926)

Collaboration with the United Nations (UNICEF)
From the Institute of Hygiene in Zagreb (1947) to the Institute of Immunology in Zagreb (1961)

GOLDEN AGES

THE INSTITUTE OF HYGIENE WITH THE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH IN ZAGREB

The School of Public Health was built with a gift from the Rockefeller Foundation and, together with the Institute of Epidemiology in Zagreb, this institution for the study, control, prevention and treatment of infectious diseases was established in 1926. On October 3, 1927 the Institute of Hygiene with the School of Public Health on Green Hill in Zagreb (the so-called White and Yellow Buildings) was officially opened, thus unifying the administrative, research, production and educational parts of the public health system in the country.

INSTITUTE OF IMMUNOLOGY IN ZAGREB

UNICEF’s intervention in the second half of the 20th century marked a turning point in our further development, from the Institute of Hygiene in Zagreb (1947), through the Central Institute of Hygiene and the Sero vaccine Institute to the Institute of Immunology in Zagreb (1961). Zagreb production successfully competed with the elite institutes of the world with its knowledge and medicinal products. New markets were conquered; there was an active participation in the training of immunological production in underdeveloped countries, scientific and technical cooperation and cooperation with other institutes in the country and institutes around the world was at the highest world level field of immunobiology.

INSTITUTE OF IMMUNOLOGY AND WHO COOPERATION

Production was accompanied by teaching work for the World Health Organization, which took place at the Institute of Immunology. The Institute was a collaborative center of the World Health Organization for research and development of immunobiological preparations as well as for the establishment of an international standard for immunobiological preparations, in which experts from the World Health Organization were recruited and educated. Scientific and technical cooperation with related domestic and foreign institutes took place continuously and successfully at all relevant levels.
