History of the Institute begins in 1893. when Royal institute for the production of animal small-pox vaccine was found in Zagreb. In 1961. Institute was named Institute of Immunology. In 1993. Institute becomes stock company. Today Institute of Immunology is Croatian largest producer of plasma products, viral and bacterial vaccines, alergens, antisera etc.

    Tradition and quality

Institute of Immunology, Inc., Zagreb has over a century old tradition in the production of immunobiological substances. The production started with the Small-Pox Vaccine in Zagreb at the institute founded by the Croatian Government in 1893. From this beginning production of an ever-increasing range of bacterial vaccines and animal sera followed.

The broadening of knowledge on the prevention and curing off infectious diseases imposed new requirements on the production of immunobiologicals substances. Consequently, the Serovaccinal Institute, today known as the Institute of Immunology, was established in 1956 to continue and extend the production of sera and vaccines. The Institute's goals today are the continuous improvement of existing products and the creation of new ones.
Institute of Immunology, Inc. is the only Croatian and one of the major regional manufacturers of immunobiologicals. It has a series of high quality products, production technologies, and expert personnel, on which it can rely for the future development and progress.
The basic activity of the Institute is the manufacture of viral and bacterial vaccines and blood products; scientific research; wholesale; and representation activities. Institute, with its technology and products (generics), could compete in the market for viral vaccines and animal antisera on a global scale and for bacterial vaccines, as well as in plasma fractionation on the regional level.
The competency of the company on the global market of viral vaccines is best shown by the results of measles and MMR vaccines sold in over eighty countries. Institute of Immunology, Inc. has its own master measles virus seed ("Edmonston- Zagreb") of highest quality. The measles virus strain Edmonston-Zagreb is the most immunogenic and least reactogenic strains in the world. A licence to produce the vaccine against measles with the Edmonston-Zagreb strain has been issued to institutions in the following countries: Belgium, France, India, Mexico and Switzerland.

The manufacture is organized in six departments:

- Department of Viral Vaccines

- Department of Bacterial Products and Allergens

- Department of Transfusiology

- Department of Experimental Animals and Antisera

- Department of Plasma Processing

- Department of Manufacture Preparation and Finalization

- Quality Control Department performs supervision of all manufacture steps, from the control of ingredients and materials through the control of final products, for all Institute products, and puts together registration documentation for the Institute products.

Strategic guidelines for development of the Institute

IN CROATIA

- according to the decision issued by the Ministry of Health, Institute of Immunology manufactures, imports and distributes vaccines from the compulsory program of vaccination in the Republic of Croatia; and

- according to the decision issued by the Ministry of Health, Institute of Immunology is in charge of plasma collection and processing to albumin and immunoglobulin for intravenous administration, and specific immunoglobulins to cover the needs of the Republic of Croatia.

ABROAD

- Further development of the Institute of Immunology relies on the development and extension of the manufacture of vaccines for domestic and especially export requirements.

- Intensive breakthrough on the international market through the development of new products and basic research is necessary.

- Until 1998, Institute of Immunology sold its products on the world market via UNICEF and PAHO. The goal is to qualify measles vaccine production for selling through these agencies in 2004. At present, there is the need of product registration on the markets abroad, which is the primary task in this stage of development. Registration of the products is completed in Mexico, Slovenia, Russia, and is under way in India and Korea. In order to realize these goals, recapitalization of the Institute of Immunology is required, whereby the following preconditions have been met:

- a decision has been issued by the respective Ministry and Croatian Privatization Fund, stating that the Government retains 25% +1 share to protect the strategic interest of the state, while the rest can be privatized through recapitalization;

- feasibility studies for the construction of the plant for the manufacture of viral vaccines and construction of the plant for human plasma processing have been elaborated; and the procedure of strategic partner selection is under way.
